It was the first tunnel kiln in the nation that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation for production control, which helps to increase efficiency and consistency.

In the late 1980s, the company began expanding overseas in order to take advantage of sales and new markets. The company founded the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other manufacturers' products to enhance its own range of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped to increase sales and expand the company's market share in the world.

They also played on records by Steely Don, Seals and Crofts and Sonny and Cher.

Discography

With a name like Asia one would expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a fairly simple rock band. The group started out as a quartet and recorded two albums - 1979's self titled debut and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a wide musical background, but their greatest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a massive blockbuster, but not without problems. Record companies put the band on spot with the ultimatum "give us an album that is a success or we'll sack you" and the pressure was on them to give it. Toto was able to do this through the aid of the smash hit "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is due to their previous experience since the members had been session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Seals and Crofts before starting the group. Their distinctive sound has since become the standard for '80s pop, and has influenced many modern artists.

The album opens with a strong and pounding sound, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly get their hooks into you. However, the album also includes some more mellow, jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album ends with Great Expectations. This song mixes folk and distorted AOR which could appear completely unnatural, but actually works very well.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned towards the negative. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band had to go through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. The band was able to release an album that topped the charts, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.

Line-up

The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour promote it. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the first album in the history of the band that did not include a single song with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the band. The group, which was missing Howe who was working with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.

In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
