Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet style of previous albums. It was a more ferocious, consistent effort that had a harder edge than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. Bobby Kimball's growing ability to play was evident in the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on previous efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the band recorded a live concert in Amsterdam that was released as a two-CD set called Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released a new studio album a few months after, and went on a world tour promote it. During this period keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started exploring old demo tapes and tapes to make a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the first album in the history of the band that did not include a single song with the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis that restricted his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.
Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened a meeting in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the band. The group, which was missing Howe who was working with Yes during that time, became Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had a special appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
