About Toto
Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word meaning "all encompassing," the group was determined to explore all styles of music.
Toto's third release, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However they came back with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two hit songs with the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour make Toto a household name across the globe.
After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is an departure from the ballads on previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.
When they record the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and create a new album with a new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a needed boost.
The band released Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a major tour across the globe. After several weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's hit song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
